#BuildSeason Week #2

Lots to do today! The FTC build team worked on replacing the fishing line in the arm that was used during tests with actual wire for the competition. An issue that came up today was that the shooter arm was rotating too fast and couldn’t load the balls properly. Also, if the arm started in the “up” position, it would only be able to shoot 2 balls or it would jam. The students decided to set the arm to start in the “down” or loaded position and to work with the programing team in slowing down the rotation of the arm so the next ball would have time to travel to the loading area before the arm would shoot again.

The FRC students got divided into 3 subteams. The first team was on charge of dismantling “Roadkill” our robot from last season. Because this year’s game also requires a fast robot, the students were instructed to save the drive train. The next subteam worked on figuring out a way to make everything fit in the robot using the whiteboard to draw sketches. Finally, the last team worked on assembling a device that will allow us to test the design for climbing up the rope.

Exciting progress for sure!

FRC Build Season Kickoff

Last Saturday, the new game for the FRC competition was revealed on the FIRST website. This game looks like a lot of FUN! Check out the game here:

In your opinion, on what should we focus as we plan for our robot? Climbing the rope, installing all the gears, or building up steam? Use the comments section below to let us know your ideas. Since the theme for the game is in Steampunk fashion, the parent volunteers have been digging on the internet for Steampunk fashion ideas that are easy and cheap to make. What are your favorites?

This week, our FRC students have focused on brainstorming ideas, learning the game, and building field parts to be able to practice.

Our FTC team is finishing up the design of our “little” robot to get it ready for the 2/11 competition in Gaffney. Some of the improvements made today were the assembly of an arm to lift the big red ball and assembling the motor for the left side of the robot.

If you participated in the Practice day back in December, check out the pictures here!

Student Orientation Meeting

The year has kicked off to a great start! After our open house and parent meetings, we met with the students today to go over some introductory information. The students and mentors got to introduce themselves, and then we introduced the guidelines that we follow in the group. An important part of today’s training was watching the Youth Protection Program video and watching the new FTC game video reveal. If you were not able to attend today’s meeting, you can watch the videos below.

The students were also reminded that they should fill out two forms online. You may access the forms by clicking on the links below:

We will meet again next week to begin working on the FRC robot to get it ready for the SCRIW competition next month and we will also begin brainstorming ideas for the FTC robot.

See you there!
